The Real Iron Man –an ICON for secularism

Some years after Tata Iron & Steel Industry started functioning, there was a serious accident in the works. A Laddle with 75 tonnes of molten metal crushed to the ground with a deafening sound emitting sparks & burning metal. The confused and frenzied shouts of men were heard above the inimical hiss of steam as red-hot metal hit puddles of water. John Keenan, the general Superintendent, could take three of the injured men in his small Car to the hospital. He chose one who seemed to have a better chance than the others to survive and told his helpers to bring him. The man shook his head in negation. ‘Do not take me away’, he said. Turning his head feebly, the Hindu nodded towards the body of a half-burnt Muslim and spoke: ’Hamara bhai ko le jao’(take my brother), he said clearly. The Hindu, who was in pain and in danger of death, remembered not that the Muslim was of a different faith, but that he was his brother.

This incident enlightens the relationship & harmony that prevailed among the workers in the factory. Jamsetji Tata’s concern for environment beauty, vision of an India where all faiths were respected equally & people lived in peace, was the foundation for such harmony thrown open in the above incident. This Iron Man’s vision was so strong that he fought against all odds (country’s internal & external) in a challenging way and with munificence and got the land for establishing the prestigious Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore. Jamsetji Tata was a Captain of Industry & Patron of learning. Our country is really proud to have had such a patriot who struggled to establish Industries & centers of learning, without foreign help, to see that peace and harmony existed among people from all religions.

Modern Offices and Industries should learn to cultivate such atmospheres in their working environment. In such case, the working results will obviously be top class.
